Lakers news: Brandon Ingram trade package to help land Kevin Durant or Kawhi Leonard | Other | Sport

That's according to ESPN's Max Kellerman, who believes a deal including Brandon Ingram and Lonzo Ball would be enough to peak the interest of the Charlotte Hornets.

Walker's stock is sky-high right now having started the season in scintillating form.

He leads the league in points per game, including 43-outing in the win over the Boston Celtics and a career-high 60 points against the Philadelphia 76ers.

But Walker can walk away from Charlotte for nothing next summer as he is set to become an unrestricted free agent.

It leaves the Hornets in a precarious position as they will not want to risk losing their franchise player for free.

The Lakers meanwhile are looking to bolster their ranks to team up with LeBron James ahead of a playoff push.

They also have their eyes on the 2019 free agency market, with the likes of Leonard, Durant, Klay Thompson and several others potentially available.

And Kellerman believes the Lakers should take advantage of Walker's position at the Hornets by trading now to make them an even more attractive proposition for top free agents next summer.

"What if Kemba Walker was the one bringing up the ball [for the Lakers]?" Smith said on First Take.

And Kellerman responded with a scenario in which the Lakers should consider trading Ball and Ingram for Walker before the deadline.

"Lets say the Lakers' plan is to pump up Lonzo [Ball] and [Brandon] Ingram because ultimately they want to keep [Josh] Hart and [Kyle] Kuzma, even though the other two might have more upside," Kellerman said on First Take.

"And they find they can't get AD for a package like that and they can't get any other guys they want for a package like that.

"They want to be attractive to other free agents and remember, because Kemba is only making $12million right now.

"You don't have to give him the contract first, keep your salary low, sign another max player, then you can give Kemba the contract.

"Lets say there was an Ingram, Lonzo deal for Kemba...

"That's a big package for Kemba.

"The question as to who says no to that deal I believe is the Lakers."

Lonzo Ball exits Nuggets game with sprained ankle

Lonzo Ball exited the Los Angeles Lakers game on Tuesday at Denver against the Nuggets with a sprained left ankle and is questionable to return.

This is the second time this season Ball has tweaked his left ankle. Ball came down on a player’s foot in practice leading up to a game against the Sacramento Kings on November 10. Then, he was considered a game-time decision before eventually playing 20 minutes in the win.

Tuesday, Ball was involved in a second-quarter collision after falling over a Nugget player at midcourt that led to his injury.

After missing time with various injuries last season and having knee surgery during the summer that kept him out of much of the preseason, Ball has played in every game this season for the Lakers.

With Rajon Rondo injured with a broken hand and Josh Hart also dealing with a sprained ankle of his own, the Lakers are quickly becoming short-handed with guards.

Tyson Chandler makes immediate impact in Los Angeles Lakers debut

LOS ANGELES -- It was fitting that the Los Angeles Lakers beat the Minnesota Timberwolves of all teams Wednesday because their wildest stretch of the season to date -- and yes, this is taking into account the fists that flew against the Houston Rockets -- started just more than a week ago with a road loss to those very Wolves.

That loss wasn't just disturbing because of the way the Lakers failed to secure yet another close game down the stretch, or because they couldn't execute simple defensive instructions like fighting over screens to challenge Jimmy Butler's 3-pointers.

What was more problematic was the sense of a fractured spirit that was apparent from watching L.A. play from LeBron James on down.

Yes, it was a quick trigger by Lakers president Magic Johnson to dress down coach Luke Walton in a meeting only seven games into the season, and yes it made him come off as volatile and even worse, hypocritical, after preaching patience throughout the summer, but Walton got the message: Winning needs to happen. Now. And apparently management came to see the roster it built in a more realistic light. An upgrade was mandatory.

And so Wednesday's 114-110 win over the Wolves wasn't just significant because it was the Lakers' third victory in four games since that Walton-Johnson summit, and it wasn't just notable because L.A. outscored Minnesota 28-22 in the fourth quarter to earn a tight one.

It was monumental because closing out the game for the Lakers was their new acquisition at backup center, Tyson Chandler. The accomplished veteran with a championship, Olympic gold medal and Defensive Player of the Year trophy to his name was making his Lakers debut one day after officially signing with the team following a buyout agreement with the Phoenix Suns.

"We needed the help now," Walton said after Chandler had nine rebounds in 23 minutes, none bigger than his tap out with 12.1 seconds left and L.A. clinging to a one-point lead. "And I don't know how that all works but give [general manager] Rob [Pelinka] and Magic credit for recognizing that and going out and getting that job done for our squad."

There's one working theory of why the Suns granted Chandler the buyout now instead of in February or March when the traditional wave of buyouts occur: Phoenix interim GM James Jones was a longtime teammate of LeBron's in Miami and Cleveland.

"James did LeBron a solid," a league source told ESPN.

When presented with the claim, LeBron said it was really Chandler who benefited the most.

"He deserves all the credit," he told ESPN of Jones. "He was very instrumental. He did right by Tyson as a veteran."

He then added more praise on Jones, whom he once called his "favorite player of all time" by telling ESPN that whenever he owns an NBA team down the line, he is saving a spot for Jones in his front office.

"I told him he needs an opt-out clause wherever he's at," James said with a smile.

Chandler's smile was even bigger at the end of the night. After driving a car full of his "s---" from Phoenix to his native L.A. on Tuesday -- "It's supposed to be five hours, but it took six because of traffic," he said -- his legs were cramped and his back was hurting, but his outlook was ebullient.

"I love this city the way they love me," Chandler said of the standing ovation he received when he checked in as the Lakers' first sub of the game. "When you're homegrown from here, go to high school and all of that, and you have these same fans that have been watching [your career] and now you represent the jersey that everyone has been cheering for their entire lives, you kind of become one.

"I've been on the other side and played the villain. Now it's great to be on this side and actually rep 'em."

It was the smallest of sample sizes, but the last time the Lakers played the Wolves, Minnesota collected a ridiculous 20 offensive boards. On Wednesday, L.A. owned the glass 47-40 while limiting the Wolves to 11 offensive rebounds.

"I think it helps stabilize us," Walton said. "I think it will help make us more of the consistent type of team we want to be defensively and rebounding."

Minnesota shot 4-for-13 (30.8 percent) with Chandler as the primary defender, according to research compiled by ESPN Stats & Information. He was particularly effective against the Wolves' budding star, Karl-Anthony Towns, who was 0-for-6 against him. In the 23 minutes he played, L.A.'s defense gave up only 47 points. In the 25 minutes he rested, L.A. gave up 63.

And the intangibles, so far, were off the chart.

Rajon Rondo singled out Chandler's veteran presence.

"It's funny, I was just talking about that I was able to relax and breathe a little bit more," he said. "Coach asked what was wrong. I'm like, 'When Tyson's talking, I don't need to talk as well.' So having another voice in the locker room is big. Especially for me and Bron."

Brandon Ingram mentioned the screens Chandler sets.

"They were solid," he said. "They were extremely solid. We felt free, we felt open when we went downhill. That's another asset for us."

And JaVale McGee, who put up 16 points on 8-for-10 shooting as the starter only to see Chandler close in his place, spoke about their depth.

"I think it's wonderful just because you got all the pressure on you when I'm in the game screening and rolling and running the floor, and then I go out and you think it's going to be different and it's the same thing coming right back at you," McGee said. "That really makes sense the way Luke was talking about we want to come in waves."

Those waves overwhelmed the Wolves on this night, and the rough surf the Lakers were riding has calmed for now.

NBA 2K19: Los Angeles Lakers Player Ratings and Roster

Well this should be fun. The world gets to watch the drama unfold as the late LeBron James attempts to carry a team that has brought shame on the Lakers name every season in recent memory. Lakers fans have had little to look forward to since Kobe Bryant’s retirement but now fans have a reason to tune in once again.

Starting Lineup

Rajon Rondo, PG (OVR 79)

Age: 32

Height:6’1”

Traits: Two-Way Point

Best Attributes: Passing, Ball Handling, Lateral Quickness

Well into his years, this will be Rajon Rondo’s first season on the Lakers. Well-known as a strong playmaker, Rondo has only averaged 8.3 points last season, but has put up a staggering 8.2 assists, which is just 3 below his all-time high of 11.7. This will be a great compliment to having LeBron James as one of their point men.

Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, SG (OVR 76)

Age: 25

Height: 6’5”

Traits: Lockdown Defender

Best Attributes: Stamina, Speed, Ball Handling

Having played with Detroit for his first four seasons, the 2018 season saw him perform pretty solidly. Having averaged 13.4 points throughout the season, as well as 2.2 assists, he also hit a career high .426 FG%. Although not the best standout player, some expect decent results from him.

Brandon Ingram, SF (OVR 82)

Age: 20

Height: 6’9”

Traits: Versatile offensive Wing

Best Attributes: 3pt, Stamina, Mid-Range

One of the more outspoken athletes about being able to play with the king himself, Brandon Ingram has some serious rep to be able to back his claims. In his last season, he was able to post an average of 16.1 points, with a .470 FG%. This means that he can find and attempt more shots than others, making him a strong opponent to face off against.

LeBron James, PF (OVR 98)

Age: 33

Height: 6’8”

Traits: All-Around Superstar

Best Attributes: Stamina, Layups, Passing

The King has decided to take his talents to Hollywood and face the beast that is the current Western Conference. After finishing his first complete season (82 games played) of his career while carrying the lacklustre Cavaliers with 27.5 points, 8.6 rebounds and 9.1 assists, it’s understandable as to why James wanted to leave Cleveland.

James is ready to move on to a new phase of his career, that of a businessman. While he will still play his heart out every time he steps on the floor, Los Angeles paves the way for big revenue off the court as well.

JaVale McGee, C (OVR 77)

Age: 30

Height: 7’0”

Traits: Tenacious Rebounder

Best Attributes: Blocks, Dunks, Rebounding

With over a decade of experience in the NBA, JaVale McGee will be looking to bring some defensive posturing to his team. Unfortunately, it seems that he won’t be able to with how he played last season. Only averaging 2.5 total rebounds and holding a measly 4.8 points averaged, one can only hope that he can actually be a strong blocker and defender.

Los Angeles Lakers, Anthony Davis Still In Play

The latest rumors have the Lakers as a potential trade destination for Anthony Davis.

Anthony Davis and the Los Angeles Lakers are still in play.

Over the weekend, Get More Sports’ Chris Sheridan tweeted that a Davis-to-Lakers trade reportedly has been “in the works” for quite a while.

That report is in line with my report on November 11th.

Sheridan also mentioned that the Boston Celtics are an option in the Anthony Davis conversation.

Sheridan’s Boston Celtics assesment is not out of the question either.

He’s been discussing that notion since early fall. We discussed that possibility on his podcast which you can listen to here.

As Heavy’s Jeff Smith noted, I discussed that probability on the Causeway Street Podcast and discussed the desire to push and renew the rivalry between the Celtics and Lakers.

On the Lakers side, there are ways to get the deal done as I noted on November 3rd:

NBA free agent Jarrett Jack says it could happen:

Ultimately, the Los Angles Lakers are looking to partner LeBron James, Anthony Davis and Kevin Durant.

I discussed KD and the Lakers on TYT Sports:

Earlier this month, I was told by a source familiar with the Lakers’ future plans that L.A. is interested in a potential Laker team with those pieces.

“The Lakers are gunning for the biggest names,” said the source via text message.

“LeBron James, Kevin Durant and Anthony Davis in LA. It’s all part of the plan.”

Early look at top 2019 NBA free agency targets

Photo by Thearon W. Henderson/Getty Images

While it may only be November, it’s never too early to take a look at the Los Angeles Lakers’ top targets of 2019 NBA Free Agency.

Despite the Los Angeles Lakers‘ legitimate pursuit of the 2019 NBA Playoffs, there seems to be this understanding that the focus is on 2019 NBA free agency. Even if they make the postseason, their odds of winning the Western Conference are slim to none.

So why not prime yourself with a look at some of the team’s top targets for next offseason?

Luckily for Magic Johnson, he’s got plenty of money to work with. After stretching Luol Deng‘s contract, the Lakers will have just enough cap space to sign a superstar to a max contract. With a number of big names scheduled to be available come July, the possibilities seem to be endless.

Who are the big names the Lakers have in their crosshairs? Are Magic and Rob Pelinka going to aim for the brightest stars on the market? Or will they turn their attention to the second tier of talent? It seems like a silly question, but we have to imagine that a number of scenarios are being tossed around when this discussion arises behind closed doors.

Enough blabbering on, though. Let’s jump right into the Lakers’ top 2019 NBA free agency targets you need to have on your mind as we work our way through the 2018-19 campaign.

LeBron James Dodges Question About Carmelo Anthony Joining The Los Angeles Lakers

With Carmelo Anthony’s recent departure from the Houston Rockets, there is no telling as of yet where he’ll go next. While the potential of him signing with the Los Angeles Lakers to play with longtime friend LeBron James is exciting, James isn’t too sure.

In a recent interview with Spectrum Sportsnet when asked about Melo possibly joining the team, James responded: “I have no idea to be honest, that’s not a question to ask me,”  he said. “Right now, we have 15 rosters spots right? We don’t have a roster spot open right now, so that’s not a question for myself.”

Anthony left The Rockets just after playing 10 games to start the season. Because of his short stint with the team, following a season with the Oklahoma City Thunder that ended with a first round playoff exit, he’s currently looking for other landing spots. Some pundits are encouraging him to retire, but the 10-time NBA All-Star appears to still want to find a team to contribute to.

While James doesn’t have much to say about Melo joining the team, he’s definitely been more vocal in other ways. Shut Up And Dribble, his Jemele Hill-narrated documentary series about the history basketball players’ involvement in social jutsice, recently premiered on Showtime. He has been also spotted wearing black t-shirts with the word “Enough” emblazoned on them as a form of protest against gun violence, and has recently told ESPN,

“It’s just how can you be comfortable with sending your kids to school or sending them to church or sending them to the movies or sending them to the mall?” He questioned. “Those are kind of like the great havens when I was growing up: school, church, go to the mall, go to a sporting event. That was like heaven. And it’s kind of scary at this point and time.”

Watch LeBron talk about Melo and The Los Angeles Lakers in the video above.

NBA news: Lakers head coach reveals reason behind star's slump in form | Other | Sport

That is according to head coach Luke Walton.

Kuzma has been one of the Lakers’ best players so far this season, but he went into Sunday’s game in somewhat of a slump,

The star had only managed a maximum of 15 points in a game throughout the Lakers’ five-game stretch.

However, when he went to the Magic, things were different, and Kuzma was firing at will again.

Despite the Lakers not coming away with the win, the star drained two three-pointers and scored 21 points.

And Walton hinted that part of the reason behind his mid-season slump was that he was feeling the weight of expectation.

“We have really high expectations for Kuz so we ask him to do a lot,” he said.

“That goes from scoring to playing defense to rebounding to guarding perimeter players and post players.

“For a second-year player, he’s got a lot of responsibility on his plate but I think he’s doing a really nice job of handling it.

“Kuz wants to win.

“He ultimately just wants to win.

“He naturally is a scorer and that’s what he enjoys doing most, but he’s all-in for whatever it takes to win.

“He’s made some really nice leaps in other parts of his game.”

The Lakers are next in action tonight as they face the Denver Nuggets.

Tip-off in Denver is 2am Wednesday morning.

Los Angeles Laker Josh Hart's Love for Girlfriend Shannon Phillips Has Fans Applauding Their Love

From the outside looking in, things look extremely bright for the Los Angeles Laker shooting guard Josh Hart.

He scored a hefty $4 million contract upon entering the NBA, his team just got a major face-lift by acquiring LeBron James, plus, he has a devoted partner in his corner to constantly cheer him on.

In fact, Hart’s girlfriend Shannon Phillips, who’s of Trinidadian descent, has been one of his biggest supporters since they were college students.

Meet Josh Hart's New Girlfriend Shannon Phillips
Instagram

Hart was a star player for Villanova University, while Phillips — a health administration and public policy major — was a standout basketball player for the University of Maryland. She first attended Rutgers University in New Jersey but later transferred after an injury.

The couple was also a big social media hit when they were in college and became quite the popular couple after posting photos together. Hart also spoke about Phillips in interviews and said they’d Facetime each other after college games.

On top of that, he’s openly praised his woman since they’ve been together and never seemed to have a problem expressing his adoration.

“When you’re no longer Superman, at least you know you got Lois Lane” wrote Phillips next to a photo of Phillips embracing him. “Can’t you tell I love her,” he wrote in another.

Reportedly, Phillips moved to Los Angeles to be with Hart when he was sent to the Lakers in 2017. There’s no word if or when they’ll get married, but one could easily say they’re both in it for the long haul.

Los Angeles Lakers starting lineup vs. Atlanta Hawks

The Los Angeles Lakers are officially on a winning streak. After taking down the Minnesota Timberwolves on Wednesday, they slew the Sacramento Kings on the road Sunday to get back to a .500 record at 6-6. Tyson Chandler seems to have fixed the issues that the Lakers encountered on the bench defensively. LeBron James continues to roll even with inconsistent contributions around him from his younger teammates. The Lakers are far from perfect. But they are slowly figuring out what this team is going to be moving forward.

They have a chance to take another step in that direction on Sunday when they close out a back-to-back against the Atlanta Hawks. Should they win that game, a strong bet considering the Hawks are one of the NBA's worst teams, they will be above .500 for the first time this season. All that's left to figure out is which Lakers will start in this matchup. They have used the same lineup for the past several games, but with Chandler rolling and Brandon Ingram dealing with a minor ankle injury, they have some decisions to make in this game.

3 people responsible for slow start

There have been plenty of Los Angeles Lakers rumors recently surrounding Luke Walton. If he is not to blame for the struggles, then who is?

Let the Los Angeles Lakers rumors begin! I mean, did anyone think that this Lakers season would be without a little Hollywood drama after LeBron James left Cleveland (…again) to take his talents to the west coast?

The gauge of the Lakers success varied from the team going to the Western Conference Finals (Not me folks…that was Stephen A. Smith) to the team struggling with a chance to miss the playoffs altogether.

Well, the Lakers coming out slow this season at 5-6, the supposed words of comfort like patience, positionless basketball and playmakers have been replaced with…drama, defensive lapses, inconsistency and frustrations. Only now it seems that frustration has let out for the world to see.

Last week, it was reported on numerous outlets that Magic Johnson chided Luke Walton for the lack of identity of the team on both ends among other things…

According to Tania Ganguli of the Los Angeles Times

Johnson, president of basketball operations, shouted and cursed at Walton, according to multiple sources who weren’t authorized to speak publicly. He asked Walton what he was doing with the team, wanting to see an offensive system in place that had yet to be implemented. At one point he chided Walton for interrupting him.

How about ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith’s take on all these Los Angeles Lakers rumors via NBC Sports

Magic Johnson is not satisfied with how they look defensively, and he thinks that Luke Walton needs a better coaching staff. Now, he’s not going to say that publicly, but I’m telling you what I know.
Clearly, if Magic Johnson is telling you he wants a more-experienced staff, that’s a hint that you might need to take heed to and do it if you like coaching the Los Angeles Lakers.

So, according to these two quotes, Magic Johnson has a problem with the Lakers offense, defense and even the assistant coaches. Outside of hot dog sales and the beer, Magic Johnson just is not happy these days.

No matter what is being said about Luke Walton being safe, knowing the competitiveness of Magic Johnson and familiarity of being in the win column of LeBron James, I don’t believe this can go on.

I laid it out in full in this piece…

The one thing that cannot be argued is this…

We can all agree that Magic Johnson, Rob Pelinka and Jeanie Buss are not going anywhere. Ms. Buss happens to run the team and Magic Johnson and Rob Pelinka have done more in 18 months than the previous regime did in five years.

Two, it’s a known fact that the players can’t be fired as well. This is a numbers game here folks. This roster was put together by Magic Johnson so they have some leeway. The only person that has to take the fall here is Walton.

But is Luke Walton TOTALLY to blame here? There are so many bad factors that caused this imperfect storm.

Let’s take a look at if there are any others that should take the blame…

Anthony Davis: Celtics revelation made ahead of potential trade, Lakers problem | Other | Sport

That’s according to Sports Illustrated’s Chris Mannix, who suggests a trade is unlikely to happen until next summer.

It was suggested last week that Davis would consider forcing through a trade away from the New Orleans Pelicans this season if it became clear they would unlikely challenge in the Western Conference.

The Celtics and Lakers were on a list of four teams that Davis would be interested in joining, including the Philadelphia 76ers and New York Knicks.

Boston cannot trade for Davis this season due to both players signing this contract extensions under the ‘Rose Rule’.

The rule prevents NBA teams from trading for more than one player who signed under the ‘Rose Rule’, meaning the Celtics will have to wait until next summer.

That could give the Lakers a small window of opportunity to make a move before the trade deadline.

But Mannix doesn’t think the Pelicans would be blown away by any offer the Lakers can make as opposed to a possible approach from Boston.

And he adds all will become next summer when the Pelicans can offer Davis a supermax extension and whether the five-time All-Star turns it down.

“I still think the Celtics, by far and away, have more assets than anybody else when it comes to acquiring Anthony Davis or anybody in the NBA,” Mannix said on NBC Sports.

“The other team in the mix are the Lakers but what are they going to throw up there?

“Brandon Ingram, who’s been hot and cold all season. Nobody really wants Lonzo Ball mostly because of the family stuff and what might blow up in the aftermath of that.

“The Celtics, at some point, if you want to get a Kawhi Leonard or in this car Anthony Davis you can’t just protect your five-man core.

“To get something you have to give something and Anthony Davis is going to require the biggest package of players in NBA history.

“It’s going to be a Herschel Walker type of deal to go get Anthony Davis.

“I think the Celtics can go get him. Will they get him? It’s all going to depend on July 1.

“Does Davis say no to that $230million offer he’s likely going to get from the Pelicans."

LeBron James, Tyson Chandler clutch in win

LOS ANGELES — LeBron James on Sunday offered a glimpse of what things might look like if he can lead the Los Angeles Lakers to an NBA championship.

Not so much as how he and the Lakers played as by how they celebrated.

A beaming James embraced teammate Tyson Chandler and the two men shouted joyously at each other amidst a cheering crowd of 18,997 at Staples Center. James scored the game-winning basket on a put-back dunk with 15.3 seconds left and Chandler’s last-second block preserved the 107-106 victory over the Atlanta Hawks.

With the victory, the Lakers improved their record to 7-6 and moved above .500 for the first time since James joined the club.

So what was James shouting at Chandler after the 7-foot-1 center blocked Trae Young's flip shot down the lane?

“Honestly, I don’t know,’’ Chandler said while standing in front of his locker room. “We were like two kids jumping for joy.’’

On cue, James shouted from across the Lakers’ locker room and ended the mystery of what he'd shouted at Chandler.

“I said, ‘That’s my dawg! My dawg!’’ James said as Chandler broke into a grin.

On Oct. 30, Magic Johnson chewed out Lakers coach Luke Walton for the team’s 2-5 start. Since then, the Lakers are 5-1, with their only loss coming against the 12-1 Toronto Raptors.

Chandler, who joined the team three games ago, has played a significant role in the Lakers' recent surge — and gave reason for James to celebrate as if he was having Larry O’Brien Trophy flashbacks, or Larry O'Brien Trophy visions.

But before we get too carried away….

The Lakers’ victory Sunday came against the 3-10 Atlanta Hawks. They let a double-digit lead slip away in the fourth quarter, committed 22 turnovers and James missed more clutch free throws.

With the Lakers trailing 106-105 with 19.9 seconds left and James at the line, he missed both free throw attempts. He also missed two free throws with 12.8 seconds left in an overtime loss to the San Antonio Spurs three games into the season.

“I’m garbage,’’ James said after the game. “I suck on my free throws. Everybody know. I needed my rhythm back.’’

Referring to James, Chandler said, “You know, we both want exactly the same thing, and that’s to turn (around) this historic franchise …and in order for that, you’ve got have these types of moments.’’

Los Angeles Lakers make a jump up NBA Power Rankings

The Los Angeles Lakers have begun their move up ESPN’s NBA Power Rankings.

The Los Angeles Lakers look like they are beginning to figure things out. Outside of perplexing losses to the Orlando Magic, who defeated the Lakers twice in an eight-day span, the team has been rolling.

Los Angeles hasn’t lost to anyone but the Magic since the first week of November, when they were defeated handily by the Toronto Raptors on Nov. 4th. Sundays have not been nice to the Lakers, as they have gotten blown out twice and barely beat the Atlanta Hawks with a blowout victory over the Miami Heat mixed in.

This past week ended on a low note with the loss to the Magic. However, before that, the Lakers picked up two more wins.

The first win of the week came in the final game of the LeBron James return tour. After blowing out the Heat, the Lakers won a hard-fought game against the Cleveland Cavaliers. The Cavaliers came to play, and had James not put the team on his back the final five or six minutes, they would have picked up a shocking upset victory.

The second victory in the week wasn’t much prettier, but it was more dominant. The Lakers played an ugly game against the Utah Jazz but pulled out the victory, which is all that matters at the end of the day. Brandon Ingram was the hero in this game, scoring a game-high 24 points.

This week was also a step in the right direction for Lonzo Ball. Ball showed some more aggressiveness, which the team and fans alike have been waiting for. Ball was great, averaging 11 points, nine rebounds and 3.3 assists per game with three total steals and blocks combined. However, the jostling of Ball’s playing time continues to be something to keep an eye on.

Despite the loss to the Magic, the Lakers still had a strong week. As a result, they are beginning to vault up ESPN’s NBA Power Rankings.

This week, the Lakers have moved into the top-10 for the first time this season. Los Angeles comes in at the No. 10 spot. Here is what they had to say about the Lakers moving up.

The Lakers haven’t lost a game to a team other than the Orlando Magic in more than three weeks. This is an indignity the purple and gold can sustain, especially during a week in which they posted the league’s best defense. The Lakers now rank 10th overall for the season, with positive trends emerging. First, there’s the Tyson Chandler Effect: The Lakers are yielding a stingy 94.6 points per 100 possessions when he’s on the floor. Second, the Lakers are defending without fouling, ranking fourth in the league in opponent free throw attempt rate. — Arnovitz

Tyson Chandler has been a true difference maker for the Lakers. He has helped settle the defensive side of the ball, as the team is no longer relying on Kyle Kuzma and LeBron James to soak up all the backup center minutes behind JaVale McGee.

Being able to play defense without fouling is easier said than done. Not giving away free points at the foul line is a huge advantage for the Lakers, especially because of the struggles they have at the foul line themselves.

This upcoming week will be a busy one for the Lakers. They will play four games, starting with a visit to the Denver Nuggets. After that, they will begin a four-game homestand, which is tied for their longest of the season.

The Lakers will host the Indiana Pacers and Dallas Mavericks on a back-to-back set Thursday and Friday. After that, they welcome the Phoenix Suns for a Sunday matinee.

If Los Angeles can pick up a victory on the road against the Nuggets, they have a great chance at an undefeated week to beef up their record.

The Pacers are dealing with some injuries, as Victor Oladipo has been sidelined three games. The Lakers should then be able to handle the Mavericks and Suns, both of whom they have already defeated this season.

Kentavious Caldwell-Pope quietly coming around

Los Angeles Lakers shooting guard Kentavious Caldwell-Pope looks to be turning a corner this weekend with two of his better performances of the season.

The Los Angeles Lakers are playing their best basketball of the season. After defeating the Atlanta Hawks on Sunday evening, the team is riding a season-high three-game winning streak. They have won five of their last six games, getting over. the .500 mark for the first time this season.

A big reason that the Lakers are beginning to turn things around is that their defense has picked up. Also, players are beginning to settle into their roles and get more comfortable with each other. Kentavious Caldwell-Pope is one player that looks to be turning the corner.

Caldwell-Pope began the season as the Lakers’ shooting guard. It was the same position he held last season when he had a career season. However, things started out slowly for him last season and the same has happened in 2018-19.

Last season, Caldwell-Pope dealt with off-court issues. He was suspended the first two games of the season and spent time in jail as well. After the off-court issues were resolved, he really stepped things up.

This season, Caldwell-Pope started the season cold. He could not buy a basket and fans patience was tested. He lasted only three games in the starting lineup before being replaced by Josh Hart.

At first, the move didn’t seem to help. Caldwell-Pope saw his minutes decrease as his production remained limited. However, during the back-to-back set this weekend, Caldwell-Pope has begun turning things around.

Caldwell-Pope had two of his best games of the season against the Sacramento Kings and Atlanta Hawks. Neither of those teams presents the stiffest competition defensively, but you have to start somewhere, and this could be where Caldwell-Pope gets his season turned around.

In the two games, Caldwell-Pope shot 8-of-18 from the field overall, knocking down 5-of-11 from the 3-point line. He scored 22 total points in 34 minutes, adding four rebounds, three assists and two steals.

Last season, that was a game’s worth of production for Caldwell-Pope. He was seeing more minutes and more plays drawn up for him offensively. This season, he has had to adjust to a more crowded backcourt and fewer chances offensively. Not only was he in direct competition with Hart, Lance Stephenson and Rajon Rondo have also eaten into his playing time.

Despite the crowded backcourt, Caldwell-Pope still has a role on this team. He is one of the better perimeter defenders on the team, and despite his poor shooting thus far, he is one of their best 3-point shooters as well.

On paper, Caldwell-Pope was a great fit for the Lakers given his skill set. He has not consistently shown that thus far this season, but this weekend was a glimpse of what he can provide.

As he gets more accustomed to his role off the bench, he should begin to produce more. Much like last season, Caldwell-Pope settled in after a rough start. Hopefully, this weekend was the beginning of that for him during the 2018-19 season.
