As Grizzlies’ television play-by-play voice Pete Pranica noted, the crowd at Oracle Arena was “murmuring” in the first quarter.

The Grizzlies, playing their second game in two nights, put the clamps on Golden State early on Monday night. Memphis led by seven late in the opening frame and kept the advantage late into the second quarter.

Eventually, the defending NBA champions found a rhythm and improved to 10-1.

Golden State wore down a Grizzlies squad with only ten active players and cruised to a 117-101 win over Memphis.

The Grizzlies have lost two straight and are now 5-4. They host the 9-1 Denver Nuggets on Wednesday.

Here are five things to know as the Grizzlies’ prepare to host Denver, which is the only team that has defeated Golden State this season:

Where are Mike and Marc?

The night after a 3-for-16 shooting performance, Mike Conley scored Memphis’ first five points against the Warriors. He scored only four more the rest of the game.

The Grizzlies’ two veteran leaders — Conley and Marc Gasol — went missing on offense for the second night in a row. Gasol took only two shots in 28 minutes, finishing with eight points, 10 rebounds and nine assists.

Combined, Gasol and Conley finished with 17 points. They combined for just 19 points in a 102-100 loss at Phoenix on Sunday.

The two remain the team’s leaders in points per game, but their early-season inconsistencies may have cost the Grizzlies winnable road games against Sacramento and Phoenix.

Jaren Jackson Jr. leads interior push

The Grizzlies’ prized rookie turned in arguably his most complete performance as a pro while serving as the team’s primary offensive option in the paint.

Jackson’s 15 points and five blocked shots helped Memphis to a 50-36 advantage in paint points. Jackson also pulled down six rebounds in 32 minutes.

Dillon Brooks’ heat check

A night after exploding for a season-high 17 points against the Suns, Dillon Brooks unleashed another scoring spurt against Golden State. The second-year wing scored 11 points in a three-and-a-half minute-span during the first quarter.

Brooks scored eight points in a two-minute span during the fourth quarter against the Suns.

Brooks’ Monday outburst helped the Grizzlies to a 31-29 lead at the end of the first quarter. It was only the second time this season that Golden State trailed after the end of the first quarter. Brooks finished with 18 points.

Tougher schedule

Four of the the Grizzlies’ next five games are against teams with winning records. The good news? Four of those five games are at home. The Grizzlies are 3-0 at FedExForum this season. Wednesday night’s game against the Nuggets is the beginning of a three-game homestand that also includes games against Philadelphia and Utah.

Hustlin’ Jevon

Looking for a positive from Monday? Rookie point guard Jevon Carter scored a team-high 29 points for the Memphis Hustle in the team’s 126-125 loss at the Sioux Falls Force. Carter also has nine steals in two games with the Grizzlies’ G-League affiliate.
