Warriors play analysis: Klay Thompson flexes on the Kings

Watch how Klay Thompson put back his last second shot to save the Golden State Warriors against the Sacramento Kings. Kevon Looney was the unsung hero with great boxing out and generally creating extra chances with offensive rebounds. Co-starring Kevin Durant, Andre Iguodala and Quinn Cook.

Due to holiday travel, I was blessedly only able to see little pieces of the losing streak. But the parts I did see:

  • KD operating at elbows and this team can’t give him spacing. So shot is contested, help comes, passes are deflected.

  • KD not looking much for 3pt shot.

  • Pace seems glacial ...

  • lots of standing around as one player attacks

  • weird formations like Looney “spacing” to corner?

  • Wacky creative KD/Klay passes not expected by role players

  • confused looking defense with energy used but weirdly missing on 50-50 balls

  • I don’t have these numbers, but how are the points from transition?

  • Quinn and D Lee can shoot. Jerebko can shoot. Even Looney and Bell can hit elbow jumpers. Seems weird that there isn’t more spacing available.

Given that the team recovered after returning home, you can argue that the losing streak can from the team being spiritually in turmoil, on an exhausting road trip, while missing two of their best passers, plus missing the Steph gravity cheat code.

Plus the special sauce of being in year 5 of an unprecedented run. They are already mentally weakened by exhaustion, lack of hunger, disease of me, etc etc, so it’s harder to cope with these strains.

Finally, it’s standard to say the Warriors system is built around Steph. I don’t agree. A system built around Steph would have a lot more high PNR. Certainly the team success is built around Steph, but Kerrball is not about optimizing Steph. I think it’s built to get the whole team involved and to build on the team-wide high IQ.
