The Sixers played terrible basketball for the first three quarters in Brooklyn, before charging back in the fourth quarter to take their first lead since 2-0 with 1:03 left in the game. Still, they found themselves down one point in the final seconds, until Jimmy Butler drained his second game-winning three-pointer as a Sixer for a 127-125 victory.
Jimmy Butler: 34 points, 12 rebounds, 2 assists, 4 steals
Brett Brown said before the game that he wanted Butler to look for his own shot more, and it’s safe to say Philadelphia’s newest star did just that Sunday night. Butler dropped a season-high (Sixers or otherwise) 34 points, shooting a sparkling 11-20 from the field, 5-6 from three, and 7-7 from the foul line. 18 of those points came in the fourth quarter to lead the Sixers’ comeback; he didn’t miss a single shot in the frame. Butler’s 6 offensive rebounds created plenty of new possessions for a Sixers team that needed every single one. He also got on the floor for a crucial tie-up, then winning the jump ball to give Philadelphia the final shot. Of course, what people will remember most from Butler’s performance will be his game-winner, giving fans deja vu from the shot against Charlotte a week ago.
Joel Embiid: 32 points, 12 rebounds, 4 assists, 2 blocks
Embiid post-ups were the most consistent source of offense throughout the game. He was repeatedly able to power through or over Jarrett Allen or whatever other Net Brooklyn head coach Kenny Atkinson threw at him. Leading the league in free throw attempts per game, Embiid once again got easy points for himself and the team, shooting 10-12 at the charity stripe. He even got creative, throwing an alley-oop to himself off the backboard.
Landry Shamet: 16 points, 2 rebounds, 1 assist
The rookie guard hit all four of his attempts from behind the arc, setting a new career-high with 16 points. Shamet has reached double figures in three consecutive games, and is now shooting an entirely respectable 36.6% from three on the season. What a bonus for a team battling roster depth issues to have a late first round pick be an immediate contributor.
Ben Simmons: 13 points, 5 rebounds, 9 assists, 3 steals, 2 blocks
This was a bad offensive game for Ben, who missed his free throws (3-6 at the foul line), many of his shots around the basket (5-13 from the field), and even missed a dunk. Still, he set his teammates up for some very easy buckets, and overall, was giving strong effort on a night when many of his teammates looked listless on both ends.
