Robert Covington had an abysmal shooting night in the Minnesota Timberwolves’ game against the Chicago Bulls. The 3-and-D forward shot just 1-of-18 from the field, and missed all of his ten tries from deep.
Following the game, Covington didn’t seem to be all too bothered with his tough outing against the Bulls, per Malika Andrews of ESPN.
“I have the mentality that I miss one, the next one I’m going to make,” Covington said. “You ain’t going to hit every shot. If one thing is not going well, you’ve got to bring the other things. That’s what I built my reputation on: becoming a two-way player.”
Timberwolves guard Andrew Wiggins similarly had a rough night shooting the ball, missing all 12 of his attempts, ten of them coming from downtown. Despite Covington and Wiggins combining for an atrocious 1-of-30 shooting overall, Minnesota still came out on top against the lowly Bulls, 111-96.
Karl-Anthony Towns more than made up for the tandem’s poor offensive showing, notching a monster stat-line of 35 points and 22 rebounds to lead the Timberwolves to its ninth win on the season. Sixth man Derrick Rose and newly-acquired forward Dario Saric also helped out ease the load as they combined for 41 points off the Minnesota bench.
Despite having arguably the worst shooting performance of his career, Covington was still able to fill out the stat sheet. In addition to his 4 points, Covington grabbed six rebounds and made his impact on the defensive end with three steals and three blocks. Furthermore, he still finished with a solid +10 on the plus-minus stat.
Covington is one of the best and most versatile defenders in the league and is slowly building his reputation as the quintessential 3-and-D guy in the NBA. Nights like this demonstrate that while his shot isn’t falling, Covington can still make a positive impact on the game.
