Professor Van Gundy: Former Magic coach to teach course at Stetson

Stan Van Gundy is going back to school.

The former Orlando Magic coach has agreed to become an instructor in Stetson’s sport business program, the private university in DeLand announced Wednesday. Beginning in January, Van Gundy, 59, will teach a class examining ethics, management and leadership involved in sport business.

“[Van Gundy] brings years of real-world experience in sport management and coaching, combined with an appreciation for how analytics are used to inform both coaching and organizational decisions,” said Scott Jones, program director of sport business at Stetson. “To be able to bring all of this experience and knowledge into the classroom is unique and a valuable resource for our students.”

Van Gundy coached the Magic from 2007-12 and led the franchise to the 2009 NBA Finals, which it lost to the Los Angeles Lakers in five games. He went 259-135 as the Magic’s coach.

Van Gundy, who also coached the Miami Heat and Detroit Pistons, was 523-384 overall as an NBA coach. The Pistons let Van Gundy go as their coach and director of basketball operations in May.
