Sumner looked great for the Pacers during the preseason, shooting 13-of-18 from the field - 72.2 percent - in his first three NBA preseason games.
Sumner scored 13 points on 6-of-8 from the field in 19 minutes off the bench in the Pacers' 110-100 win in their preseason opener against former UC star Gary Clark and the Houston Rockets.
The 22-year-old Sumner made his NBA debut in April in the Pacers' final game of the regular season, and he made his only field-goal attempt and grabbed his first rebound in two minutes of action.
Sumner was drafted in the second round in 2017 by the New Orleans Pelicans, then traded to the Pacers. The Pelicans signed Sumner's former XU teammate, Trevon Bluiett, to a two-way contract, and Bluiett is now playing for the G League's Westchester Knicks.
Sumner tore his ACL at St. John's during his redshirt sophomore year at Xavier. He averaged 11.4 points and about four assists per game over parts of three seasons for the Musketeers.
