Sacramento Kings point guard De’Aaron Fox is having a breakout sophomore campaign this season, and his coach is well aware of it. Kings head coach Dave Joerger noticed that the game has slowed down for his emerging star guard, per Steve Godfrey of Deseret News.
“The game has slowed down for him,” Sacramento coach Dave Joerger said. “He’s making enough shots to make people play him, but we are still able to get up and down, and he’s able to keep his momentum going north and south.”
This has to be music to the ears of Sacramento fans, who have long been dragged through the mud for several seasons now, as their team has been mediocre for over a decade now. However, there seems to be some light hovering around the Kings franchise with the emergence of Fox as the team’s lead guard.
We often hear the words said by Joerger, “the game is slowing down,” as the moments when stars around the league figure out how to really play the game at the NBA level. To hear these words from Fox’s mentor, who sees his development everyday, is an encouraging sign for the Kings’ future.
Fox had a pretty underwhelming rookie season and mostly struggled with efficiency, a common with first-year point guards. The former 5th overall pick of the 2017 draft is one of the fastest players in the league, even in his rookie year. Now with a year’s experience tucked under his belt, Fox seems to have figured out how use his speed more effectively and be more in control of the game.
The Kings are one of the more pleasant surprises in the NBA this season with a 10-9 start. Without a doubt, Fox is a major contributor to the team’s early season success. The 20-year speedster is currently averaging 17.7 points, 4.2 rebounds, 7.7 assists, and 1.1 steals on an efficient 47.2 percent shooting from the field.
Fox and the Kings take on the Utah Jazz tonight as they look to bounce back from a heartbreaking 1-point loss at the hands of the defending champion Golden State Warriors.
