Thunder two way player Tyler Davis is quietly dominating the G League

Tyler Davis has put together an impressive season so far in the G League.

The Thunder signed Davis to a two-way contract before the start of the season after Davis went undrafted out of Texas A&M during the NBA Draft in June.

He appeared with the Nets during Summer League in Las Vegas where he averaged 11 points, 4.5 points and 1.3 blocks in four games for Brooklyn.

As a two-way contract player, Davis is eligible to spend up to 45 days with the Thunder while he will spend the rest of the season with the OKC Blue of the G League.

So far, so good for Davis.

In nine games this season for the Blue, he is averaging 17.8 points, 12.4 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 1.2 blocks per game while shooting 62 percent from the field.

He has helped the Blue start off the season with a 7-2 record as they are currently third in the Western Conference behind the Sioux Falls Skyforce and the Santa Cruz Warriors.

Perhaps the most impressive aspect of his game so far has been his rebounding ability. He ranks fourth in the G League in rebounding while his 6.1 offensive boards per game are first among all players.

In terms of rebounding rate, which estimates the percentage of missed shots a player grabs, Davis ranks second in offensive percentage at 21.5 and is seventh in total rebounding at 21.5 percent.

On Friday against the Iowa Wolves, Davis recorded 25 points and a career-high 21 rebounds with 11 coming on the offensive end. His 21 rebounds are tied for the second most in a game this season.

Given his elite rebounding numbers this season, Davis currently leads the G League with seven double-doubles and has recorded a double-double in each of his last six games for the Blue.

While he has certainly impressed so far on the glass, Davis is among the leaders in offense. His 62 percent shooting from the field currently ranks 10th in the G League among qualified leaders.

The Blue currently lead the G League as a whole in points in the paint with 67.3 points per game as Davis is scoring 13.6 per game, which is 15th in the league.

Davis set a career-high with 29 points against the Austin Spurs on Nov. 18, which marked a season-high for any Blue player this season as he surpassed Scotty Hopson’s 27 points from a few games prior.

While he is averaging 17.8 points per game this season, he also ranks first in offensive rating at 123.8 points per 100 possessions among players that have appeared in at least five games.

As Davis has dominated the G League so far, it ultimately remains to be seen just how much time he’ll spend with the Thunder this season as he has yet to appear in a game during the regular season.

Davis scores the majority of his points in the paint, and with Steven Adams healthy, the team may not necessarily need Davis too much as a back-to-the-basket type of player.

Of course, that could change further down the line, but due to recent injuries, the Thunder have opted to keep Deonte Burton around as the other player signed to a two-way deal.

In any case, Davis will look to keep up his strong play in his first season with the Blue.
